Clarete is the piece where it all began – the piece that made me realise that I could become anything I want if I work hard enough for it. It started from some big white, square, glossy paper that I found from work after a spring clean. I am not even sure what they were meant to be for but they were going to end up in the bin. So I took them, not really knowing what I was going to do with it. Once at home, I experimented with acrylic paint that was given to me by a friend and tested it on the paper, using feathers (upcycled from an old costume) as a makeshift brush to spread the paint. Looking at it drying, I was amazed by the fact that I could create art by upcycling. This gave me the idea that by using previously owned materials, discarded items and the such I could still express myself through art and help in the little way that I could to minimize the accumulation of trash and single-use plastic.
